Starting From Scratch

Sarting from scratch isn’t easy.
It takes time and effort, strategy and unrest, worry and caress, patience, virtue, and solace.
But if you’re passionate about it and know the reward will be worth the time, it’s much easier.
This process is precisely what I, Justin Frenkel, went through while creating UConn’s Music Producers Club. At first glance, a club of this sort seems simple in nature; a club about something that people enjoy doing—a hobby. This statement is true, yes, but it also isn’t.
Creating a club at UConn is no easy task. It requires a whole group of people to found it and get it off the ground. If you want the club to be successful and have a true purpose, you must find an advisor to support your efforts and apply for funding. I did the entire process all by myself.
I was able to complete every task, requirement, and detail independently. The Music Producers Club is what it is today because I acted on my passion and ideas. I chose to make a dream a reality. I felt that there was a need for individuals who shared a similar interest, or for those who wished to learn said interest, to have a space to come together and thrive.
Before starting the club, I thought to myself, “Why is it so difficult to find other producers?”
At the time, I hadn’t even known if there were other producers at UConn. However, I figured that, out of the over 20,000 students at UConn, at least a FEW must be interested in music production, right?
I sure was.
After initiating the process and establishing all the necessary arrangements, the members of my executive board seamlessly fell into place. By sheer chance, I had established an executive board, and the club was ready to go.
Our first meeting filled every seat. Engagement was high, sounds were low—our teaching session had begun. Members learned tips and tricks about music production, connected with like-minded individuals, and had a space to thrive.
Since this meeting, we’ve built a close-knit community eager to learn about music production, improve their craft, support one another, and connect with fellow creatives.
And it all started with a simple idea—and the decision to act on it.
